Research
Broad research interests include youth violence (e.g., gangs, school crime), adolescent perceived risk and fear of victimization, and the evaluation of crime and victimization prevention/intervention programs. Current research projects include the 10-city evaluation of Project Safe Neighborhood’s Comprehensive Anti-Gang Initiative (Co-Principal Investigators: Edmund McGarrell and Timothy Bynum) funded by the National Institute of Justice, the evaluation of the Lansing Neighborhood Stabilization and Youth Violence Initiative (Co-Principal Investigators: Edmund McGarrell, Louie Rivers, and Jesenia Pizarro) funded by the National Institute of Justice, and the longitudinal assessment of the impact of gang membership on adolescent development. Other interests include the international comparison of youth gangs and delinquent youth groups as part of the Eurogang Program of Research, and how perceptions of crime and victimization risk impact behavior, especially among persons most at-risk for victimization.
