One of our core research strengths is the study of gun, gang &Professor Christopher Melde
drug- related violence. Assistant Professor Chris Melde’s article in
a recent edition of Criminology (May 2009) presents the counter-
intuitive finding that although youth who join gangs are at increased
risk of being assaulted or killed, they actually feel safer
through gang involvement.

Gordon Kettler, BS '63, MS '64 is retiring from the General Motors Corporation as Executive Director of Global Security for their North American, Europe, Latin America, Africa, Middle East, Canada, Mexico and Asia Pacific operations. Gordon has been recognized for his leadership in the field of criminal justice and commitment to Michigan State University. He is the recipient of the Michigan State University Distinguished Alumni Award, College of Social Science Outstanding Alumni Award, and the School of Criminal Justice Wall of Fame Award. Gordon established the Arthur F. Brandstatter and Gordon W. Kettler Visiting Scholars Endowment and has served on the Alumni Association Board of Directors.

Forensic Sciences Foundation/National Institute of Justice Research grants have been awarded to forensic science graduate students Melissa Bodnar, Chemistry, “Forensic Analysis of Salvia Divinorum and Related Salvia Species Using Chemometric Procedures”, John McIlroy, Chemistry, “Use of Volatile Organic Compounds to Determine Postmortem Interval”, and Ethan Smith, Biology, “Rhizobial Profiling of Soil for Forensic Applications”.

The School of Criminal Justice is pleased to introduce an online Master's level certificate program in Conservation Criminology, the interdisciplinary study of environmental crime and risks. The certificate is offered by the School, Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, and the Environmental Science and Policy Program.
